San Francisco Bay is the main attraction, and surrounding the bay on all sides is a vast metropolitan complex. Visitors to San Francisco may sample cuisine from around the world, watch professional and college sporting events, charter a fishing boat, or peruse shops filled with elegant goods. From the Golden Gate Bridge to Chinatown, from the Marin headlands to the Bay Bridge, the views, sites and sounds of San Francisco attract millions of visitors. International flights originate here and cruise ships depart. The culture events, exhibits and shows always have been an attraction to Sacramento residents, and the two areas share access to the bay, jobs and many interests.

Bodega Bay and the beautiful northern California coast is a leisurely morning drive from Sacramento. A wonderful seaside lunch at one of Bodega Bay's many restaurants is one option. Beaches here are accessible, beautiful and frequently, very private. The historic Russian outpost, Fort Ross, is 21 miles north of Bodega Bay on Highway 1. Established in March of 1812 by 25 Russian traders, the fort is now a state park. On the return trip, Highway 116 from Jenner takes visitors through redwood forests.

Monterey is a bit of a stretch for a day trip, but it can be done if that's all the time available. Unsurpassed coastal vistas, seals, sea otters, sea birds and deer are everywhere. So are fine restaurants. The Monterey Aquarium is special. The historic flavor of Cannery Row remains. Follow the shoreline. There's plenty of places to sit and marvel at the beauty of this special place. There's a modest access fee to take the 17-mile drive past magnificent coastal views and wonderful homes. Monterey and its neighbor, Carmel, offer remarkable shopping adventure. Visit the mission at Carmel, and if possible, drive a short distance south on Highway 1 to enjoy more California coastline.

Sacramento is a short drive from one of the world premiere wine producing regions, Napa and Sonoma. Cultural and culinary events hosted by the hundreds of wineries are commonplace. There are so many fine restaurants, wineries and events ongoing, the best day trips involve some advance planning. The natural beauty of the fields of grapes surrounded by oak and grass hillsides, is worth the drive. Visit Glen Ellen and the Jack London Historic State Park. "The grapes on a score of rolling hills are red with autumn flame. Across Sonoma Mountain wisps of sea fog are stealing. The afternoon sun smoulders in the drowsy sky.
