Sacramento's zoo started small in 1927, assembling an assortment of some 40 animals. It was know as the "little zoo in the park. In 1960 the zoo grew from 4.2 to 14.3 acres. Zoo cages gave way to enclosures with suitable habitats for the animals. The animal collection includes nine species of carnivores, 10 species of primates, birds, amphibians, turtles and tortoises, lizards, snakes, the West African drawf crocodile, giraffe, Nile hippopotamus, eland and other species. The zoo is located at 3930 West Land Park Drive. Fees are modest, but higher on weekends. Generally the Sacramento Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but hour do vary.

The Folsom Zoo is unique. Rescued animals reside here, animals either abandoned in the wild, turned into pets and unable to survive in the wild, or injured animals nursed back to health, but unable to survive on their own. The zoo is part of the city park on Natoma Street, next to the commuity center and City Hall. Four black bears, foxes, coyotes, mountain lions, feral pigs, squirrel monkeys and a variety of birds may be seen. The zoo also includes peacocks, raccoons, squirrels, pigmy goats, a badger, barbados sheep and chickens. Volunteers and zoo members support this effort to care for and enjoy the animals.
